2013 UCI Mountain Bike and Trials World Championships 2013 – Newsletter #4
There are now only six weeks to go before the biggest and most prestigious mountain bike event of the year takes place in Pietermaritzburg, and we are looking forward to welcoming the world to the event. Final preparations are being made to the event site and the courses are all ready to be ridden by the world’s best and there is a buzz of anticipation in the city as well as throughout the cycling community in the country about this event.
One of the new developments on the site is the addition of the Burry Stander Memorial Garden which will be dedicated at a short ceremony on Thursday 29th August at 4.30pm and all are welcome to attend.
This dedication is one of a few functions and side events that will be staged during the week and all riders, teams and management are urged to attend the opening ceremony that will have a true Kwazulu – Natal flavour and sound that will take place at the event site on Tuesday 27th August at 6.30pm.
Details of all the functions and activities will be sent out to all teams closer to the time and will also appear on the on the event website at www.mtbworldchamps.co.za .
All teams – national teams as well as others – are urged to make their team booking arrangements as soon as possible with Carly Shuman of CRA Events who is managing this element so as to avoid disappointment around positions and facilities. As time gets shorter, so more beds in Pietermaritzburg are being booked and I urge all teams and athletes to make contact with Ecco Tours at the very earliest so as to ensure that these arrangements, together with car hire etc, can be finalized soon so as to avoid disappointment and frustration.

Much of the same organizational team that has been in place for the various international cycling events staged in Pietermaritzburg will be working on the 2013 events and the organizers, together with the City have developed a prime piece of real estate which is almost right in the centre of the city over the past three years as the premier Mountain Bike venue in the country. This 12 hectare piece of land boasts competition ready Cross Country and Downhill courses that were all utilized at the previous editions of the MTB World Cup events as well as the new Cross County Eliminator and Trials competition venues.

As the two World Championships are being staged one after the other, the same website backbone is being used to service both events so just click on the correct logo on the right hand side of the page to get info on the UCI MTB & Trials World Championships.
Team & Rider Areas
The competition site is extremely compact with the start / finish area for the Cross Country competition only 100m from the finish areas for the Downhill competition. The areas designated for the teams and riders are also within close proximity to these areas. The organizers will work closely with the UCI to determine where the various teams will be positioned as per the prevailing conditions linked to the regulations.
Due to the fact that the majority of teams and riders attending the event will not have a large amount of infrastructure at their disposal, the organizers have put mechanisms in place whereby the teams can be supplied with infrastructure they require, dependent on which zone they choose to be in.

Please note that the advertised cutoff date for team bookings for all teams is now past and bookings will be subject to a late booking fee.
Travelling to Pietermaritzburg
There are a number of ways to get to Pietermaritzburg and South Africa now has three international airports – OR Tambo in Johannesburg (450km from Pmb), Cape Town (1400km from Pmb) and King Shaka International in Durban (90km away) as well as Oribi Airport in the city. This is a regional airport and can be reached on a connection from Johannesburg with a number of daily flights between the two centres.
Most international airlines fly into South Africa and nearly all of them arrive into OR Tambo in Johannesburg or Cape Town. King Shaka International airport has limited international flights arriving there but all domestic airlines fly into King Shaka in Durban.
The best suggested option for teams is to fly into Johannesburg and then either fly directly to Pietermaritzburg, or if schedules do not allow, to Durban and travel by car or with the official transport to the city.
Another option is to collect vehicles in Johannesburg and drive to Pietermaritzburg which is situated 450km from Johannesburg and is an easy 4 – 5 hour drive on excellent highways.

Pietermaritzburg and surrounds is blessed with a large variety of accommodation options to suit most if not all needs of teams and individuals. There are a number of hotels ranging from 2 stars to 4 star grades within the city as well as an extensive mix of Bed and Breakfast establishments and Guest Houses.
Ecco Tours are best positioned to assist riders and family members that need accommodation for the event and the person to make contact at Ecco Tours is Nathan Levendall and he can be contacted at firstname.lastname@example.org . Ecco’s details will also be on the event website.
Due to the fact that the Masters World Championships will be staged in Pietermaritzburg the week prior to the elite championships, teams and riders and family members are urged to make their accommodation arrangements and bookings early to ensure no disappointments closer to the event.

Please note that although Pietermaritzburg is quite a compact city, it is advisable for teams and riders to arrange for the use of a vehicle whilst at the event in order to get around.
Visa and Passport Arrangements
Every person seeking to enter South Africa must be in possession of a valid passport for travel to South Africa and, where necessary, a visa. Enquiries can be directed to South African diplomatic representatives abroad or the Department of Home Affairs in Pretoria. Visitors who intend traveling to South Africa’s neighboring countries and back into South Africa are advised to apply for multiple entry visas. Visas are not issued on arrival at South African ports of entry.
• Passport valid for no less than 30 days after the expiry of the intended visit;
• Passports must contain at least one unused page for entry or departure endorsements;
• Payment of the prescribed fee, if applicable;
• A vaccination certificate, if required by the Act;
• Statement and/or documentation confirming purpose and duration of visit;
• Two identity photographs (see website for details);
• Proof of financial means; and
• A return / onward ticket.
In terms of existing arrangements, passport holders of certain countries are exempt from visa requirements. Tourists must satisfy immigration officers that they have the means to support themselves during their stay, and that they are in possession of return or onward air tickets. They must also have valid international health certificates.

Training & Riding Facilities
Due to the fact that the MTB Masters World Championships is being staged at Cascades from the 21st – 25th August, access to the competition venue and the courses will be limited at best and nonexistent from 23rd August so those teams that will be in Pietermaritzburg early, may need to find alternative venues to ride and train.
An area that will be available for riders and teams is in Karkloof which is not far from Pietermaritzburg and there is a very nice XCO route in the Karkloof which is available to riders who wish to do some training in the lead up to the event. There are also marked 20km http://karkloofmtbtrails.co.za/karkloof-mtb-routes-and-maps/20km-map/ and 30km http://karkloofmtbtrails.co.za/karkloof-mtb-routes-and-maps/30km-map/ routes available should riders want to do some endurance training.
Riders would need to sign a day indemnity and pay a trail fee of R30 per rider at the club before setting out and the Karkloof Mountain Bike Club would also be happy to discuss catering if desired. Hot showers and safe parking are available.
